WHAT IS THE YOUTH ADVISORY COMMITTEE? (YAC)
The Youth Advisory Committee (YAC) acts in an advisory capacity, providing the Parks & Recreation Department with valuable insight regarding youth programs and services in our community. Committee members learn various aspects of community leadership and serve as advocates for Denison’s youth, inform them of existing opportunities, and listen to suggestions on what the Parks & Recreation Department can do to improve its youth programs. Possible activities may include planning events, activities, programs, or service projects.
WHO CAN BE A MEMBER OF YAC?
YAC is made up of 7 high school/middle school students (grades 8th – 12th). One from each grade level and 2 at large (any grade level, 8th-12th). We are currently accepting applications to fill all seats on the committee. Each member will serve a 2 year term (September 1-August 31), unless joining as a senior then will serve a 1 year term (all terms will be modified for 2020/21 due to the start date of this committee). Previous leadership experience is not required.
WHEN DOES THE COMMITTEE MEET?
YAC meets every 1st and 3rd Thursday of the month from 5:30pm-7:00pm (times are tentative). The expectation is to maintain an excellent attendance record of all YAC meetings, events, and activities, and actively contribute in group projects and outings.
WHERE DOES YAC MEET?
Regular meetings are held at the Aquatic Center. Special events, activities, or programs may take the committee to various parts of the city.
WHY SHOULD I CONSIDER BEING PART OF YAC?
Serving on YAC offers valuable leadership experience and active community involvement. It provides the opportunity to work closely with a city department, community leaders, and residents in promoting and improving social, educational, cultural, and recreational activities for you in Denison.
